A better title for this article might be ‘Getting Away From Them All’. At the
Harmony Club resort, Bermuda, peace and harmony reign supreme – in an
environment that’s completely free of kids.
Of course, we all love the little rascals, but there comes a
point in every parent and grandparent’s life when it seems like a great idea to
get away from the family for a little while and enjoy some fun with people your
own age. Equally, if you don’t have kids of your own, or they’ve left home but
have yet to have families, you don’t always wanted to be surrounded by other
people’s delightful – if distressingly noisy – kids during your well-earned
vacation.
If all of the above sounds like a description of you, the
Harmony Club is definitely the place to go for your next vacation. The resort
itself has a relaxed, tranquil and timeless atmosphere, though it’s only a
short journey from the island’s capital, Hamilton. The whole place is
constructed in traditional Bermudan colonial style, and most accommodation is
in one of five pastel-painted cottage-style blocks. All rooms are decorated in
classic styles, designed to put guests at ease in truly relaxing surroundings.
All rooms feature tea and coffee making equipment and a full range of amenities
to make your stay as relaxing as possible.
As it doesn’t cater for a younger age group, the Harmony Club
resort doesn’t have quite the full range of activities on site that are
available in many resorts. Instead the whole place is set up for relaxation.
You can enjoy a game of tennis on one of the resort’s courts, or go for a game
of golf at one of the many nearby courses – green fees can be handled through
the resort’s reception desk if necessary. The price you pay to stay at the
Harmony Club includes use of the facilities at the nearby Elbow Beach,
justifiably famous as one of the best beaches in the world.
For those who don’t even want to stray that far, the resort has
a pool and sauna on site – so if you’re simply chasing the ultimate in
relaxation you need only travel a few yards. There’s also a range of indoor
pastimes and activities to be enjoyed in the resort’s Gombey Lounge. If you do
happen to feel like taking part in something a little more adventurous, the
Harmony Club resort has partnered with ResQuest, a local activity company that
offers a full range of sports and activities, including just about every land
and water-base adventure activity you can think of, and a few you probably
can’t, too!
One of the attractions of a stay at the Harmony Club is its
proximity to the town of Hamilton. Hamilton, although the island’s capital, is
not usually as thick with tourists as George Town at the far end of the island.
However, if you like a little peace, quiet and small-town serenity, Hamilton is
a great place to visit for an afternoon. If you can, check out the town’s
magnificent gothic cathedral, built by the island’s British colonial government
in a style reminiscent of so many churches back home. You’ll find more evidence
of the islands’ association with all things British if you visit the Nation
Gallery of Bermuda, which contains paintings by famous English artists like
Gainsborough and Reynolds as well as work from local painters such as Winslow
Homer. It’s also fun to stroll along the sea front by the old harbor and admire
the beautiful old Victorian houses that line the sea front. Hamilton is a
graceful town, although those wishing to kick back and enjoy themselves a
little will be pleased to find some great pubs and night spots in the old town
area.
Back at the Harmony Club you may be ready for something to eat.
The resort’s very own Casuarina Restaurant offers a selection of dishes for all
tastes, and is happy to cater for those wishing to eat a low fat or low
cholesterol diet. By the standards of some contemporary resorts, the Harmony
Club does require that guests observe a reasonably tight dress code at dinner –
though this only means that smart casual is the norm, which serves to maintain
the civilized and peaceful atmosphere upon which the resort prides itself.
The Harmony Club is one of the best resorts in Bermuda for those
who are interested in enjoying complete peace and quiet amid uncomplicated,
relaxing surroundings. If you’re looking for a vacation to really lower your
blood pressure and make you forget the stresses and strains of everyday life,
this could be the one for you.
